Tracking CAPEX/OPEX

In this tutorial, you will find out how to track CAPEX/OPEX on worklogs.

Step 1: Creating CAPEX and OPEX custom field

Barney wants to track both CAPEX and OPEX hours for his organization.

For that purpose he or his administrator first needs to create Jira Custom Select Fields with the two CAPEX and OPEX values:

If Barney works on a Company Managed Jira projects he can do that by:

  1. Select Settings Icon then Issues.

  2. Under FIELDS, select Custom fields.

  3. Click Create custom field. Make sure to select All to view the available field options.

  4. Select the type of field you want to create and click Next.

  5. Find and chose - “Select List (single choice)”

Then he fills in the form with Field Name - Capex/Opex_cb (cb standing for company based) and hits Create

and associates the new custom field with the relevant Jira project Screens

If Barney works on a Team Managed Jira projects he can do that by:

  1. From your project's sidebar, select Project settings > Issue types.

  2. Select Issue Types menu

  3. From the Create a Field, select Dropdown

  4. Fill in the form with Field Name - Capex/Opex_tb (tb standing for team based), Options , Required and Save Change

After this the newly created field Capex/Opex_tb needs to be added in the Description Fields for all Issue Types (Bug, Story, Task). Do not forget to Save Changes

Step 2: Assigning new CAPEX/OPEX to Jira issues and logging work

Barney needs assign the CAPEX or OPEX to Jira issues and then log work to them.

He opens a Jira issue related to CAPEX, then edits the Capex/Opex_cb or Capex/Opex_tb field. From this field, he selects CAPEX. Now he can log time to this issue.

He continues by opening Jira issues related to OPEX then edits the Capex/Opex_cb or Capex/Opex_tb field. From this field, he selects OPEX, and then logging time.

Step 3: Creating a custom report for CAPEX/OPEX

With all the time logged for his company, Barney can generate a custom report that shows the hours spent on CAPEX and OPEX.

He selects the Filters Button then from the Custom Select Fields he selects the Capex/Opex_cb or Capex/Opex_tb field (depending the Team or Company Based Project).

This will filter and return both Capex and Opex hours and related issues.

If Barney wants only the Capex hours he needs to select that value from the Custom Fields Value field

He'll export this report as an Excel/PDF/CSV spreadsheet to send to his company's Accounting department. In that excel Export there will be also an Capex/Opex Custom Field column

Finally, he'll save this custom report so that she can run it again later.
